The Science of Shopping

N S Ramnath pointed me to this excellent article on “The Science of Shopping“. It brought back some old memories for me. Right after I passed out of NIFT (yes, I did graduate in Fashion!), I started a small t-shirt label along with Divi. Whenever I had some spare time, I would visit a shop, hang around and watch people shop. You learn all sorts of fascinating things by oberving, that you never would if you asked. People have all kinds of different strategies to find what they want. Some take the first thing that fits. Some depend on peer-approval and shop in the comfort of groups. Some are looking for something that they can’t describe. None of this observation was scientific, or well reasoned, but it taught me a lot about people. Anyone who ever wants to be in business should take a week off and go watch people shop. The trick is to make friends with the store manager and hang around in the background. Or make friends with the security and get hold of the surveillance tapes :).
